Mounted on a NEMA enclosure, independent of the tower, or within the turbine nacelle, SEELOC — self-sealing washers are finding new applications for sealing doors and knockouts. For use wherever environmental internal seepage is problematic — when a common washer is unable to block contaminants, such as moisture, dust, sunlight, and ozone. SEELOC washers will seal up to 100psi and easily handle temperatures from -160°F to +500°F (-106°C to + 260°C). These uncommon washers are fabricated with a 300 series stainless steel curved platform. A green colored silicone ribbed section is molded onto one side (facing down) creating a high-pressure sealing design. Installed with conventional screws or bolts, SEELOC washers are also showing up in electric automobile battery compartment covers. SEELOC is a natural for green applications. For military, and aesthetic applications where black non-reflective surface is required, APM also offers a black oxide finish with black silicone rubber.

Due to increasing international popularity of SEELOC high-pressure sealing washers, there is a significant demand for metric sizes. APM is responding with additional washer sizes that have an O.D of 12.mm to 25mm, and thru hole size choices from 6.35mm to 15.87mm. Additional sizes are contemplated based on demand.

There are some applications that are so environmentally stressful that standard electromechanical sealed and unsealed switches cannot stand up to invasive moisture, dust and dirt penetration. Heavy-duty bulldozing is just such an example. An international bulldozer maker needed to develop their own harsh environment test program for their control panels which included a number of pushbutton switches. First, they built a special shaking jig to simulate hard-bouncing road work conditions. They completely covered the panel and switches with a mud slurry. Half of the switches had custom APM seals with specially designed, wiping action-seals mounted on them to prevent switch jamming from the dirt encountered in the field. And the shaking began. After extensive, repeated shaking cycles, the switches were checked for operation. The switches with the APM HEXSEAL boots worked perfectly, while the switches with no seals jammed in operation. All APM HEXSEAL® sealing boots are UL recognized and third party tested. Operational life is 100,000 actuations plus; a number we are very proud of. Another customer who builds cement delivery trucks has its wet cement unloading control wired to the back of the vehicle.

Imagine the amount of water and cement splashed during unloading when the truck is driving through bad weather or when loading/unloading cement. See next story regarding hermetically sealed switches.

All electromechanical toggle switches, whether sealed or unsealed, have the same potential external sealing problem that makes them operationally vulnerable to toggle-well ice, dust and dirt build up. Either can freeze the bat, making the switch unreliable in certain conditions. The ONLY way to protect and prevent this condition from occurring is the utilization of a proven all-weather elastomeric sealing boot that can handle temperature from -94° F to +400°F (-70°C to + 204°C). It’s what the U.S. Military and a myriad of construction equipment companies and industrial companies have been doing for more than 60 years throughout the world.

True, you will not find APM self-sealing screws on your car’s GPS. But you will find them on the most sophisticated industrial-grade GPSs installed on farm equipment, underwater and energy exploration equipment of all kinds. GPS makers know about the high-pressure sealing capability to 100psi (689.5 kPa) internal/external of these specialty environment fasteners — which make them a must for their precision instruments.
